Step 1: Choose Where and When You Need the Car
Enter the city or airport where you want to collect the car, your preferred return location, the rental dates and the approximate times. Popular choices include Tirana, Tirana International Airport, Durrës, Sarandë, Vlorë and Shkodër.
If you want to return the vehicle somewhere other than the pick-up location, select the two locations separately. One-way rental may be available for some routes and cars, sometimes with an additional delivery or relocation fee. The booking form will show the available options for your selected journey.
Choose your times carefully. Car rental periods are normally calculated in 24-hour blocks, so returning the car later than the selected time may add another rental day. Pick-up or return outside the supplier's regular working hours may also cost extra when the chosen vehicle allows it.
For help choosing different pickup and return locations, read our one-way car rental guide for Albania.
Step 2: Compare Available Rental Cars
After you submit the search, the booking system displays cars available for your selected location and dates. Use the filters to narrow the results according to what matters for your trip, such as:
- automatic or manual transmission;
- vehicle class and body type;
- deposit amount or no-deposit offers;
- accepted payment methods;
- insurance options;
- mileage allowance;
- number of seats and luggage capacity;
- air conditioning;
- child seat or additional driver;
- permission for cross-border travel, where available.
Do not compare cars by the daily price alone. A slightly higher-priced offer may include more suitable insurance, a lower deposit, unlimited mileage or a convenient airport handover. Always compare the total cost and the complete conditions.
Step 3: Read the Conditions for the Exact Car
Rental terms can differ between vehicles, even when the cars appear similar. Open the full offer and check all conditions before you click the booking button.
Pay particular attention to:
- the total rental price for the selected period;
- the amount payable online and the balance due at pick-up;
- whether a security deposit is required;
- how the deposit and remaining balance can be paid;
- the driver's minimum age and required driving experience;
- included insurance and any excess or deductible;
- mileage limits and possible excess-mileage charges;
- fuel policy;
- permitted and prohibited roads;
- rules for taking the car outside Albania;
- fees for delivery, one-way rental or out-of-hours service;
- cancellation conditions for that booking.
The booking advance, security deposit and insurance excess are three different things. The advance confirms the reservation and forms part of the rental price. A deposit, when required, is temporary security held by the supplier. The insurance excess is the maximum amount for which the renter may be responsible under the applicable insurance terms. Do not assume that one replaces another.
For a detailed explanation of coverage, excess and deposits, read our car rental insurance guide for Albania.
Step 4: Choose Optional Extras
Depending on the car and supplier, you may be able to add services such as a child seat, booster seat, additional driver, extended insurance, cross-border permission or delivery to a specified address.
Only select extras you need, and check whether each item is included or charged separately. If you need something essential, such as a child seat or permission to visit another country, add it during booking rather than assuming it can be arranged at the last minute.
Step 5: Enter the Driver and Arrival Details
Provide the main driver's name, telephone number and email address accurately. The contact details are used to send the booking confirmation and may be needed by the rental company to coordinate the handover.
For an airport pick-up, add your flight number if the booking form requests it. This helps the supplier monitor delays and organise the meeting. A delayed flight does not automatically change all rental conditions, so contact the number in your voucher if your arrival time changes substantially.
The person named as the main driver should meet the age and experience requirements shown in the selected offer and bring the required original documents.
Step 6: Review the Price and Pay the Booking Advance
Before paying, review the selected dates, locations, vehicle terms, extras and final price. The booking page shows the amount of the online advance. The remaining balance is normally paid to the rental supplier when the vehicle is collected, using one of the payment methods allowed for that car.
The online advance is paid by bank card through the booking platform. Do not confuse the card used for the advance with the payment method required for the balance or security deposit. A vehicle marked as available without a credit card may still require an ordinary bank card for the online advance.
Never send money to an unverified personal account based only on a message. Use the booking interface and the official contact details in your confirmation.
Step 7: Receive and Check Your Booking Voucher
After the reservation is confirmed, a voucher is sent to the email address provided during booking. Check your inbox and spam folder. Save the document on your phone and consider keeping an offline or printed copy.
The voucher normally contains important booking information, including:
- the confirmed dates and locations;
- the car and selected services;
- the agreed rental price and payment details;
- the rental company's contact information;
- instructions for the handover;
- the booking and cancellation conditions.
Read the voucher as soon as it arrives. If a name, flight number, date or location is incorrect, contact the booking support team promptly. Do not wait until the pick-up day.
Step 8: Collect the Car in Albania
Follow the meeting instructions in your voucher. At an airport, the handover may take place at a rental desk, in a designated parking area or at another stated meeting point. For a city booking, the car may be collected from an office or delivered to an agreed address, depending on the selected offer.
The rental company will verify your documents, collect any remaining payment and deposit required by the booking, and ask you to sign the rental agreement. Read the agreement before signing and make sure it matches the confirmed conditions.
Documents to Bring
The main driver will generally need:
- a passport or accepted identity document;
- a valid original driving licence;
- the booking voucher;
- the payment card or cash required under the selected car's terms.
Whether an International Driving Permit or an official translation is required can depend on the country that issued your licence and the format of the document. Check the requirements for your exact vehicle before travelling. Digital photographs of documents may not replace the originals.
Inspect the Vehicle Before Leaving
Allow enough time for a proper inspection. Walk around the car in daylight where possible and record its condition with clear photos or video. Check the bodywork, glass, wheels, tyres and interior.
Make sure that:
- every visible scratch, dent or other defect is recorded in the handover report;
- the fuel level and mileage are written correctly;
- the lights, air conditioning and essential controls work;
- any requested child seat or other extra is present;
- you understand the correct fuel type;
- you have the rental company's contact details and emergency instructions.
Ask for clarification before driving away if anything differs from the voucher or rental agreement.
During the Rental
Keep the rental agreement, voucher and supplier's telephone number accessible. Follow Albanian traffic and parking rules, use only permitted roads and respect any geographical restrictions in your contract.
Do not take the vehicle outside Albania unless cross-border travel has been approved in advance and written into the rental documents. Likewise, do not assume every mountain, gravel or unpaved route is permitted. Some roads may be excluded from the rental or insurance conditions.
If the car breaks down, is damaged or is involved in an accident, contact the rental supplier immediately and follow its instructions. Contact the police or emergency services when required. Do not arrange repairs independently unless the supplier authorises them.
Changing or Cancelling a Booking
Cancellation rules are not identical for every offer. Some cars may carry a special free-cancellation label, while standard deadlines or stricter supplier conditions may apply to others. Check the cancellation terms displayed during booking and in your voucher before paying.
If your plans change, use the contact method stated in the confirmation. Include your booking details and keep a copy of the request. A change of date, time, location or vehicle may depend on availability and may require a new booking or a recalculated price.
Do not rely on a general cancellation statement from another car or an older reservation. The conditions attached to your confirmed booking are the relevant ones.
Returning the Rental Car
Return the vehicle to the agreed location and at the agreed time. Follow the stated fuel policy, remove personal belongings and allow time for the supplier's inspection.
Whenever possible, complete the return together with the representative and obtain written confirmation that the vehicle has been handed back. Take final photos or video showing the car, fuel level, mileage and return location. If you must return the car outside office hours, follow the supplier's key-drop and parking instructions exactly.
The timing and method for releasing or returning a security deposit depend on how it was paid and on the supplier's conditions. Ask for written confirmation if the process is not clear.
Airport Pick-Up or City Pick-Up: Which Is Better?
Airport collection is convenient when you want to start driving immediately after arrival. Enter your flight details, check whether an airport delivery fee applies and read the meeting instructions carefully.
City collection may suit travellers who plan to spend their first days in central Tirana without a car. It can also reduce the need to drive or park in a busy city centre immediately after a flight. Compare the complete price, delivery arrangements and your itinerary rather than choosing by location alone.
Common Booking Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing the cheapest car without reading its deposit, insurance and mileage terms.
- Confusing the booking advance with the refundable security deposit.
- Assuming that “no credit card” also means no bank card is needed online.
- Entering the wrong email address, phone number or flight number.
- Booking the wrong Tirana location: the city and Tirana International Airport are separate pick-up points.
- Selecting return times that unintentionally create an extra rental day.
- Expecting cross-border travel or unpaved-road use without written permission.
- Failing to record existing damage during the handover.
- Arriving without the original driving licence or another required document.
- Ignoring the specific cancellation deadline shown for the chosen car.
